Hardy Hikers I

Date:     Tuesday, April 8

Time:    9:30 AM

Place:   Crockett Gardens and Falls

(Cedar Breaks Park, Lake Georgetown, TX)

Difficulty:  5 out of 10; 5 miles and 3.5 hours

Crockett Gardens and Falls are named after R. M. Crockett, who grew produce to sell in Austin.  This hike is less known but is one of the best hikes in the area. The trail travels through dense cedar woods before opening onto tall bluffs that overlook Lake Georgetown.  From there, the trail circles around a stream to reach Crockett Gardens and Falls where crystal water springs from a ridge and “tumbles over a bluff overgrown with vegetation along the falls.”  We will have our lunch break at this site, which is about 2.5 miles from the trailhead.

The hike includes a section of the Good Water Hiking Trail.  We will encounter stone relics of an old homestead, foundations of buildings, and views of 100-foot sheer bluffs, Lake Georgetown, and Russell Park.  The trail surface consists of rocks, dirt and narrow trails with half sunny and half shady exposure.  Wear sturdy shoes, wear a hat, and dress for the weather.  You may also want to bring your hiking stick and insect repellent.  Do not forget to bring water and your picnic lunch.
